What this template is for
Two pieces: a plain polygonal base, and a lid that lifts off and closes with a folded star. The lid is already enlarged by the material thickness and the clearance you set, so it goes over the base rather than jamming on it.

- Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.

How to put it together
These pictures are the star lid box itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the three steps never do.

Cut the solid lines
Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.

Score every dashed line
Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.

Fold, glue and hold
Build the base like any polygonal box — wall, bottom flaps, base disc. Roll the lid wall up the same way, then fold its petals down one after another going round and slide the last under the first to make the star.
Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let the box dry standing up.
Questions about the star lid box
- What is the difference from the petal box?
- The petal box is one piece and the swirl is the top of the box itself. This is two pieces: a plain base you fill, and a separate lid that lifts off and closes with the same folded star. Use this one when you want to open and shut the box more than once.
- Will the lid actually fit over the base?
- Yes. The lid polygon is grown by two board thicknesses plus the clearance you set, which is what it takes for one wall to pass outside another. Increase the clearance if you are cutting thick board or your folds come out soft.
- Why has the lid no flaps at the bottom?
- Because it has to drop over the base. Flaps folded into the bottom of a lid are exactly the thing that stops it going on. Only the base has bottom flaps, and a disc goes on top of them to make the floor.
- Can I make the star pointed or rounded?
- Both. The star point curve is zero by default, which gives straight-edged points — the classic folded star. Raise it and the points bow out into petals instead.
Print your own design on it
Add a logo, photo or pattern in the panel on the left and drag it onto the star lid box. It is trimmed to the cut outline, embedded properly in the PDF, and never leaves your computer — most free template sites hand you the outline and stop there.
