Printing it

  1. Type your size above, then download the PDF.
  2. Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
  3. Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.

How to put it together

These pictures are the dome lid box itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the steps never do. The names in capitals are the labels printed on the template.

  1. Cut the solid lines

    Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.

  2. Score every dashed line

    Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.

    Step by step

    1. Cut out the base tray and the lid: the long LID strip and the two LID END pieces.
    2. Base: fold the walls up and glue its corner tabs.
    3. Lid: curve the long strip gently over the edge of a table. Do not score the curved part.
    4. Fold all its small tabs in and glue them to the inside of each LID END, one end at a time: the (skirt) edges first, then round the arch.
    5. Put the lid on the base.

Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let it dry before you use it.

Questions about the dome lid box

How is the curved lid made?

From one strip bent over two arched end pieces. The strip runs skirt, curve, skirt; its small tabs fold in and glue to the inside of each end. Curve it gently over the edge of a table before gluing, and do not score the curved part — only the two lines where the skirt meets the curve are creases.

How high can the dome go?

Up to half the width of the lid, which is a half cylinder. Ask for more and it is eased back to that, because a taller dome would be wider at the top than at the rim. At half the width the curve meets the skirt smoothly and there is no crease at all.

Why is the strip longer than the edge of the ends?

Because it wraps round the outside of them. Down the middle of the board the strip has to travel half a board thickness further for every radian it turns, and it turns through half a circle, so it is pi times half a thickness longer. Without that the lid comes out short.

Will it print on one sheet?

Yes, at the size it opens with — about 194 × 252 mm, which fits A4 and US Letter with the two lid ends set beside the strip. Make it much longer or deeper and it will need a bigger sheet.
