What this template is for
A hexagonal (or 4, 8, 10 or 12-sided) box whose top is two half lids hinged on opposite sides. They meet down the middle, with a hole for a ribbon to tie them shut. Favours, sweets, jewellery, small gifts.

- Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.

How to put it together
These pictures are the flip-lid box itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the three steps never do.

Cut the solid lines
Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.

Score every dashed line
Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.

Fold, glue and hold
Glue the wall into a ring, fold the bottom flaps in and glue the BASE onto them from inside. Fill it, fold both LIDs down so they meet in the middle, and thread a ribbon up through the hole and tie a bow.
Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let the box dry standing up.
Questions about the flip-lid box
- How do the two lids close?
- Each lid is hinged to one side of the box and is exactly half of the top — cut along the line through the centre parallel to its hinge. Fold both down and they meet edge to edge down the middle, with nothing left open and nothing hanging over the side.
- Why only an even number of sides?
- Because each lid needs a side directly opposite the other one to hinge on. With 6 or 10 sides the lids meet corner to corner; with 4, 8 or 12 they meet across the middles of two sides. Type an odd number and it is rounded to the nearest even one.
- What is the hole for?
- A ribbon. Each lid has a half circle cut out of the middle of its edge; shut, the two make one round hole. Thread a ribbon up through it from inside before you close the lids, or push a loop through, and tie a bow. Set the diameter to zero for plain lids.
- Will it print on one sheet?
- Yes, at the size it opens with — six 38 mm sides, 45 mm tall, come to about 249 × 189 mm, which fits A4 and US Letter turned sideways. More or longer sides make a longer strip.
