Printing it
- Type your size above, then download the PDF.
- Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
- Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.
How to put it together
These pictures are the faceted ball box itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the three steps never do.
-
Cut the solid lines
Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.
-
Score every dashed line
Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.
-
Fold, glue and hold
Score every dashed line. For each half, glue the band's tab behind the last panel to make a ring, then glue each trapezoid and triangle to the next by its tab, working up to the point. Fold the rim tabs of the BOTTOM half inward, fill it, and set the TOP half on them.
Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let it dry before you use it.
Questions about the faceted ball box
How round is it?
Each half has three rings of facets: a band at the middle, a sloping ring and a point, with the corners on the 22.5° and 67.5° lines of latitude of a true sphere. Eight facets round the middle is the default; 12 looks rounder, 6 more like a gem.
How does it open?
The bottom half has a tab on every panel of its rim. Fold them inward and the top half sits on them, as the gem stone box’s crown does. Glue it down for a decoration that stays shut, or leave it loose to lift off.
What size is the default?
A ball 80 mm across with 8 facets round the middle. Each half is one strip 237 × 67 mm, so the two print on A4 or US Letter paper.
