Printing it
- Type your size above, then download the PDF.
- Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
- Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.
How to put it together
These pictures are the shagun envelope itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the steps never do. The names in capitals are the labels printed on the template.
-
Cut the solid lines
Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.
-
Score every dashed line
Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.
-
Step by step
- Print your design on the FRONT, then cut the outline and the two curved slits beside COIN.
- Crease the four dashed lines round the FRONT.
- Fold the two side (glue) flaps in, then fold the bottom (glue) flap up over them and glue it down.
- Push one edge of the coin through each slit, so the card between them holds it flat on the front.
- Put the notes in and close the FLAP, or tuck it in.
Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let it dry before you use it.
Questions about the shagun envelope
What size is it?
It is sized from the note: a ₹500 note is 150 × 66 mm, and with 5 mm of room all round the envelope is 160 × 76 mm closed. The flat sheet is 218 × 165 mm, so one prints on A4 or US Letter. Type the size of your largest note and the flaps follow it.
How does the coin stay on?
Two curved slits are cut in the front on a circle 2 mm smaller than the coin, one on each side. Push one edge of the coin through each slit: the card between them holds the coin flat against the front. The default fits a 22 mm one-rupee coin; set 20 mm for the newer, smaller one, or 0 for no slits.
Which paper should I use?
Card of 160 to 250 gsm folds cleanly and keeps the coin from tearing through. Print your design on the printed side first: the FRONT panel is the plain face with the coin, and the flaps make the back.
