The pencil box template, flat and folded
What this template is for
A box shaped like a giant pencil: a hexagonal body sharpened to a point at one end, with a tuck lid at the eraser end. Back to school, teacher's gifts, stationery sets and kids' party favours.
Also called pencil shaped box · giant pencil box · crayon box · back to school favour box — all the same shape, and this is it.

Printing it
- Type your size above, then download the PDF.
- Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
- Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.
How to put it together
These pictures are the pencil box itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the three steps never do.
-
Cut the solid lines
Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.
-
Score every dashed line
Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.
-
Fold, glue and hold
Score every dashed line. Glue the long tab inside the last panel to make a hexagonal tube. Fold the six triangles in to a point, gluing each tab under the next triangle. Fill it from the other end, fold the dust flaps in and close the END lid, pushing its tuck inside.
Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let it dry before you use it.
Questions about the pencil box
- How is the point made?
- Six triangles, one on the end of each wall panel, fold in to a hexagonal point. Each has a glue tab on one edge, made narrow enough to stay in the wedge between it and the next triangle, so the tabs never overlap a face.
- What size is the default box?
- A hexagon with 20 mm sides, a 120 mm body and a 32 mm point: a pencil about 152 mm long and 35 mm across the flats, in one piece on one A4 or US Letter sheet.
- How do I fill it?
- From the eraser end. Fold the four small dust flaps in and close the END lid, pushing its tuck inside. Print the body yellow with a pink eraser band and a wood-coloured point for the classic look.
Print your own design on it
Add a logo, photo or pattern in the panel on the left and drag it onto the pencil box. It is trimmed to the cut outline, embedded properly in the PDF, and never leaves your computer — most free template sites hand you the outline and stop there. How printing your own design works.
