Printing it

  1. Type the size you need above, in millimetres, centimetres or inches.
  2. Download the PDF and print it at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
  3. Too big for your paper? Tick Split across several sheets and it prints across as many as it needs, with overlaps and matching letters to tape together.

How to put it together

These pictures are the mitered cone itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the three steps never do.

  1. Cut the solid lines

    Every solid line is a cut. Scissors are fine; a craft knife against a steel rule is neater on the straight runs. Cut the inside shapes, like a thumb hole, before you free the outline — the sheet is easier to hold while it is still whole.

  2. Score every dashed line

    Dashed lines are folds, and they want scoring first: run an empty ballpoint, a bone folder or the back of a butter knife along a ruler. Card folded without scoring cracks along the outside of the bend. Fold each crease both ways, then back — it makes the shape almost close itself.

  3. (glue)CONE

    Fold, glue and hold

    Roll it up and glue the lap, working from the wide end. The two curved edges are not circles — do not try to true them up with a compass.

Glue: a glue stick is enough for paper; use white PVA on card and hold each seam for thirty seconds. Tape works on the inside of any seam if you would rather not wait. Let a box dry standing up, not lying on a flap.

Questions about the mitered cone

Why are the edges not circular arcs?
Because a flat cut across a cone does not unroll into a circle. The slant distance from the apex stretches and shrinks round the rim, so both edges are worked out one step at a time. Do not try to true them up with a compass.
Why did the tool change my angle?
Either the cut was steeper than the cone wall itself, which would fold the rim back past the apex, or on a flat cone it sliced out past the other end. The tool eases the angles back until both rims stay clear and says what it used.
Can I use this for metalwork?
The geometry is the same pattern development a sheet metal worker would draw. Export the DXF, allow for your own seam and bend radius, and it transfers straight onto the sheet.
