Printing it
- Type your size above, then download the PDF.
- Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
- Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.
How to put it together
These pictures are the gingerbread man box itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the steps never do. The names in capitals are the labels printed on the template.
-
Cut the solid lines
Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.
-
Score every dashed line
Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.
-
Step by step
- Cut out the BASE, the BOX WALL, and the LID and LID WALL if you set a lid.
- Crease the wall at the four corners of the two feet.
- Glue the wall strip round the BASE, curving it round the head and hands and in round the neck, the armpits and between the legs.
- Fold the tabs in, set the base on them and glue.
- Make the lid the same way.
Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let it dry before you use it.
Questions about the gingerbread man box
Where does the wall fold?
Only at the four corners of the two feet. Everywhere else it curves: round the head and hands, and in round the neck, the armpits and the gap between the legs, which are all rounded at least 4 mm so the wall can bend.
What size is the default box?
A gingerbread man 100 mm from hand to hand and 126 mm tall, 30 mm deep with a 12 mm lid. It prints on two A4 or US Letter sheets.
Will a cookie fit?
Bake with a cutter a little smaller than the box: the inside of the box is the size typed in, and the lid is one board and 0.6 mm bigger all round. A 90 mm cookie cutter suits the default box.
