Put a logo, photo or pattern straight onto the box — most free template sites give you the outline and stop there. Drag it where you want it; it is trimmed to the cut lines so nothing prints off the card, and it stays in your browser.

Printing it

  1. Type your size above, then download the PDF.
  2. Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
  3. Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.

How to put it together

These pictures are the fish box itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the steps never do. The names in capitals are the labels printed on the template.

  1. Cut the solid lines

Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.

  2. Score every dashed line

Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.

  3. BASEBOX WALL(glue)LIDLID WALL(glue)

    Step by step

    1. Cut out the BASE, the BOX WALL, and the LID and LID WALL if you set a lid.
    2. Crease the wall at the two tips of the tail.
    3. Glue the wall strip round the BASE, curving it round the body and in at the root and the fork of the tail.
    4. Fold the tabs in, set the base on them and glue.
    5. Make the lid the same way.

Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let it dry before you use it.

Questions about the fish box

Where does the wall fold?

Only at the two tips of the tail. Round the body it curves, and in at the tail’s root and at its fork, which are rounded so the wall can bend.

What size is the default box?

A fish 110 mm from nose to tail and 79 mm tall, 35 mm deep with a 15 mm lid. It prints on three A4 or US Letter sheets.

Can I use it for a tattva fish?

Yes. Make it in silver or red card and stand the real or sweet fish inside, or set the length to 300 mm and print on A3 for a large tattva tray.
