The backdrop flower template, flat and folded

What this template is for
The giant paper flower for wedding backdrops, stages, nurseries and shop windows: rings of cupped petals on a base disc and a rolled fringe centre, sized from the flower's diameter. Round, pointed or heart-shaped petals.
Also called giant paper flower · paper flower backdrop · large paper flower · wall paper flower — all the same shape, and this is it.

Printing it
- Type your size above, then download the PDF.
- Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
- Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.
How to put it together
These pictures are the backdrop flower itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the steps never do. The names in capitals are the labels printed on the template.
-
Cut the solid lines
Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.
-
Score every dashed line
Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.
-
Step by step
- Cut out every petal, the BASE and the CENTRE strip, and the fringe cuts in the strip.
- On each petal, overlap the two sides of the V and glue them, so the petal cups. Fold its foot back along the dashed line.
- Glue the eight OUTER petals by their feet round the edge of the BASE.
- Glue the MIDDLE petals inside them, sitting between, then the INNER ones.
- Roll the CENTRE strip up tight, fringe at the top, glue its end and glue it in the middle.
Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let it dry before you use it.
Questions about the backdrop flower
How big is it?
Type the finished diameter. The outer petals are 0.95 of the radius long and two thirds of that wide, the middle ring 0.78 and the inner ring 0.58 as long. The default 240 mm flower has 114 mm outer petals and prints on about five A4 or US Letter sheets; for flowers over 550 mm, print on A3 or tile the petals.
How do the petals cup?
Each petal has a V cut out of the middle of its foot. Overlap the two sides of the V and glue them, and the petal curves into a cup. Curl the top edge over a pencil for a softer, more open flower. The foot below the dashed line folds back and is glued to the base.
How many petals?
Eight outer, seven middle and six inner, glued in rings on a base disc 0.4 of the flower across, each ring turned to sit between the petals of the one outside it. The centre is a strip fringed with cuts 4 mm apart, rolled up tight.
