The rangoli stencil template, flat and folded

What this template is for
A rangoli stencil to cut from card or plastic: rings of petals and dots round the middle, 6, 8 or 12-fold, every hole kept 3 mm from the next. Sift colour powder through it for Diwali, Pongal, Onam, weddings and the daily kolam.
Also called rangoli stencil · kolam stencil · rangoli template · diwali rangoli design — all the same shape, and this is it.

Printing it
- Type your size above, then download the PDF.
- Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
- Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.
How to put it together
These pictures are the rangoli stencil itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the steps never do. The names in capitals are the labels printed on the template.
-
Cut the solid lines
Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.
-
Try the first one
There is nothing to fold. Before you cut a stack, try the first one on what it is for and change the size above if it needs it.
-
Step by step
- Cut out the square and every hole with a craft knife on a cutting mat, or on a cutting machine.
- Lay the RANGOLI stencil flat on the floor where the design goes.
- Sift rangoli powder or chalk through the holes with your fingers.
- Lift the stencil straight up, and move it along to repeat the pattern.
No glue needed.
Questions about the rangoli stencil
How do I use a rangoli stencil?
Lay it flat on the floor, take a pinch of rangoli powder or chalk and sift it through the holes with your fingers, then lift the stencil straight up. Move it along to repeat the pattern, or fill in round it by hand.
Why 3 mm between holes?
Thinner bridges of card tear when you cut them and bend when you lift the stencil. Every hole is held 3 mm from every other hole and from the border; where the pattern would bring two closer, that ring of holes is drawn smaller. Holes under 3 mm across are left out.
What should I cut it from?
Card of 300 gsm for a few uses. For a stencil that lasts, cut it from 0.3 to 0.5 mm plastic (an old file folder works) with a craft knife, or send the SVG or DXF to a Cricut or a laser cutter. The default is 180 mm square and prints on A4 or US Letter.
