The moravian star template, flat and folded

What this template is for
The Herrnhut Advent star: 26 points, 18 on square bases and 8 on triangles, glued to one another by their base flaps into a star with no core. Advent and Christmas windows, porches and stairwells; leave one point off for an LED light.
Also called moravian star · herrnhut star · advent star · 26 point star — all the same shape, and this is it.

Printing it
- Type your size above, then download the PDF.
- Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
- Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.
How to put it together
These pictures are the moravian star itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the steps never do. The names in capitals are the labels printed on the template.
-
Cut the solid lines
Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.
-
Score every dashed line
Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.
-
Step by step
- Cut out every SQUARE and TRIANGLE point and crease all their dashed lines.
- Roll each point into a cone and glue its tab inside the far edge. Fold the base flaps in.
- Glue eight SQUARE points in a ring by their side flaps, then four above and four below, and one at the top and bottom.
- Glue the eight TRIANGLE points into the triangular gaps that are left.
- Hang it by a thread through a tip. For a light, leave one square point off and use an LED only.
Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let it dry before you use it.
Questions about the moravian star
How many points does it have?
26, as the traditional Herrnhut star: one on every face of a rhombicuboctahedron, 18 on square bases and 8 on triangular ones. The triangle faces sit a little further from the middle, so their points are drawn shorter and every tip lies on one sphere.
How big will it be?
With an 18 mm core edge and 42 mm points the star is 127 mm across, and the 26 points print on about three A4 or US Letter sheets. Double both numbers for a 255 mm star.
Can I put a light in it?
Yes. Set the light option to 1 and one square point is left off, leaving a square hole to push an LED bulb holder or fairy lights through. Use LED lights only: paper and hot bulbs do not mix.
