Paper Circle Ball Ornament Template

The classic paper ball from circles: each circle is creased along a triangle, the flaps fold out and glue to the next circle, and 20 of them close into a round ornament (or 8 or 4 for a smaller, pointier one). Christmas trees, garlands and mobiles.

Put a logo, photo or pattern straight onto the box — most free template sites give you the outline and stop there. Drag it where you want it; it is trimmed to the cut lines so nothing prints off the card, and it stays in your browser.

Printing it

  1. Type your size above, then download the PDF.
  2. Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
  3. Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.

How to put it together

These pictures are the circle ball ornament itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the three steps never do.

  1. Cut the solid lines

Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.

  2. Score every dashed line

Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.

  3. 1234567891011121314151617181920

    Fold, glue and hold

Cut out every circle and crease each side of its triangle so the three flaps stand up on the printed side. Glue the flaps of neighbouring circles together, back to back: for the 20-circle ball, make a ring of ten, then a cap of five on each end. Thread a loop of string through a join before you glue the last circle in.

Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let the box dry standing up.

Questions about the circle ball ornament

How big is the finished ball?
With 20 circles, about 1.65 times the circle diameter from point to point, and a little more across the flaps: 70 mm circles make a ball about 115 mm wide. With 8 circles it is about 1.2 times the circle, and with 4 about the circle’s own size.
Why do the flaps always match?
Each flap is the slice of a circle cut off by one side of its triangle. Every circle and every triangle is the same size, so the two flaps that meet on an edge are the same shape and glue flat back to back.
Which paper works best?
Card of 160–200 gsm holds a crisp crease. Print a pattern or use two-sided paper: the flaps stand out on the finished ball, so both sides show.
How many sheets is it?
At the size it opens with, 20 circles of 70 mm print on four A4 or US Letter sheets.

Print your own design on it

Add a logo, photo or pattern in the panel on the left and drag it onto the circle ball ornament. It is trimmed to the cut outline, embedded properly in the PDF, and never leaves your computer — most free template sites hand you the outline and stop there. How printing your own design works.
