Why is the wall in more than one piece?

So the whole box fits on one sheet. A tree is all points and notches, so the strip that runs round it is long for the size of the box — longer than an A4 page. The tool cuts it into as few pieces as keep it on the page, and puts every join on a straight edge with room for its glue tab, never on a corner. Glue the end tab of piece 1 behind the start of piece 2, and so on round, until the wall is a closed loop.

Which way do the wall folds go?

They alternate. The folds at the tip of each tier fold one way, and the folds at the notch under each tier fold the other. Crease every line on the wall pieces before you glue anything and it will wrap the base without a fight.

What sizes do I type?

Width is across the widest, bottom tier. Height is from the top point to the foot of the trunk. Depth is how deep the box is, which is how much it holds. These are the inside of the box; the lid is drawn a board thickness plus the clearance bigger all round so it slips on. A very wide, flat tree has points too sharp to fold round, so the tool keeps the height at least four fifths of the width and tells you when it has.

Will it print at home?

At the size it opens with, 70 by 95 mm and 30 deep, the whole box — base, lid and every wall piece — is about 182 by 266 mm and prints on one A4 or US Letter sheet, inside the margin the tool leaves. A bigger tree needs more wall pieces, and each piece is printed whole: if one is bigger than your paper the tool says so and offers bigger paper or a smaller tree. A piece is never split across sheets.

How to put it together

These pictures are the christmas tree box itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the three steps never do.

Cut the solid lines
Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.
Score every dashed line
Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.
Fold, glue and hold
Crease every fold on the wall pieces first: the tier points fold one way, the notches under each tier the other. Glue each wall piece's end tab behind the start of the next, in number order, until the wall is a closed loop. Sit it round the base, fold the little tabs in under the base and glue them. The lid is the same job, one size up.

Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let the box dry standing up.
