Printing it

  1. Type your size above, then download the PDF.
  2. Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
  3. Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.

How to put it together

These pictures are the coffin box itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the three steps never do.

  1. Cut the solid lines

    Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.

  2. Score every dashed line

    Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.

    Fold, glue and hold

    Glue the wall strip into a loop round the base, folding it at each of the six corners. Fold the little tabs inwards, sit the base on them and glue each tab down. The lid is the same job one size up.

Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let it dry before you use it.

Questions about the coffin box

What shape is a coffin box?
Six-sided in plan: narrow across the head, widest at the shoulders, then tapering to a narrower foot. All three widths and the shoulder position are yours to set, so you can go from a stubby Halloween favour to a long, lean prop.
How do I make the lid fit?
Leave the lid depth above zero and the lid is drawn slightly larger than the base already — by the clearance you set plus two board thicknesses, because the wall stands inside it on both sides. Raise the clearance if your card is soft or your glue is thick.
Why is the wall printed as one long strip?
It bends round the whole outline in one piece, so it has to be as long as the perimeter. If that is longer than your paper, it is printed in numbered sections that glue end to end.
