Put a logo, photo or pattern straight onto the box — most free template sites give you the outline and stop there. Drag it where you want it; it is trimmed to the cut lines so nothing prints off the card, and it stays in your browser.

Printing it

  1. Type your size above, then download the PDF.
  2. Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
  3. Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.

How to put it together

These pictures are the woven heart basket itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the three steps never do.

  1. Cut the solid lines

Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.

  2. Score every dashed line

Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.

  3. HALF 1HALF 2HANDLE

    Fold, glue and hold

Cut out both halves in two colours, and cut along every slit. Fold each half in two on the dashed line, printed side out. Weave the loops: take the first loop of HALF 1 and pass it through the first loop of HALF 2, then around the second, through the third, and so on; the next loop starts the other way round. When every loop is woven the heart opens as a basket. Glue the ends of the HANDLE inside the two lobes.

Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let it dry before you use it.

Questions about the woven heart basket

How do I weave the two halves together?
Fold each half in two on its dashed line, so the slits make loops. Hold the halves at right angles. Pass the first loop of one half through the first loop of the other, then around the second, through the third, and so on. The next loop starts the other way round: around, through, around. When every loop is woven the heart opens into a little basket.
What size is the default heart?
A 70 mm heart, woven from three strips a half, each 23 mm wide, with a 150 mm handle. Both halves and the handle print on one A4 or US Letter sheet. The tool keeps every strip at least 8 mm wide, as narrower ones tear while they are woven, and says so when it has to use fewer strips.
Which paper works best?
Paper or thin card, 100 to 160 gsm, in two colours: red and white is the classic Danish heart. Glossy or double-sided paper shows on both faces of the weave. Card over 200 gsm is too stiff to weave more than two strips.

Print your own design on it

Add a logo, photo or pattern in the panel on the left and drag it onto the woven heart basket. It is trimmed to the cut outline, embedded properly in the PDF, and never leaves your computer — most free template sites hand you the outline and stop there. How printing your own design works.
