Getting it printed properly →

Printing it

  1. Type your size above, then download the PDF.
  2. Print at 100% — never “fit to page”, or every measurement comes out wrong.
  3. Too big for the paper? Pick your paper size and leave Fit the pieces to the page ticked: each piece gets its own place on a sheet and the PDF comes out with every page in it, nothing cut in half and nothing to tape.

How to put it together

These pictures are the shoulder box itself, not a generic diagram — change the measurements above and the template changes, but the three steps never do.

  1. Cut the solid lines

    Every solid line is a cut. Do the inside shapes first, while the sheet is still whole and easy to hold.

  2. Score every dashed line

    Dashed lines are folds. Score each one first — an empty ballpoint against a ruler — or the card cracks along the outside of the bend.

  3. BASESIDESIDEENDENDLIDSIDESIDEENDEND(glue)NECK

    Fold, glue and hold

    Build the BASE and the LID like trays, gluing each corner tab inside the wall beside it. Glue the NECK into a ring with its tab, push it down inside the base until it stands up above the rim by the neck height, and glue it to the base walls. The lid goes on over the neck and rests on the base's rim.

Glue: a glue stick for paper, white PVA on card — hold each seam thirty seconds, and let the box dry standing up.

Questions about the shoulder box

What is a shoulder box?
A lid box with a third part, the neck, glued inside the base and standing up above it. The lid slides over the neck and stops on the base, so the lid and base meet flush with one line round the box.
How tight is the lid?
The lid is cut the clearance you set (plus half a millimetre) bigger than the neck, so it slides on and off without falling off.
Will it print on A4?
Yes. At the 70 × 50 × 60 mm size it opens with, the base, lid and neck each print whole on A4 or US Letter: two sheets in all.
